Dawn’s inspirational!

When Dawn Watts from Copmanthorpe was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2013, she was determined not to let her illness define her. She decided to organise various fundraising events to raise money for York Against Cancer.

Her first act was to shave off her hair as she faced chemotherapy, raising £4,569.19 plus £542.50 gift aid in the process. Other fundraising events have included a 15,000ft tandem skydive and ‘Dawnfest’, a concert by tribute band ‘A Foreigners Journey’.

Throughout the fundraising Dawn, who is a community nurse, has been continuing with her treatment, including a mastectomy and further surgery to her chest wall. She is currently on monthly infusions to help fight her condition, but she sees no reason to stop the fundraising. ‘Dawnfest2’ took place took place in February 2016 and Dawn has ‘Dawnfest3’ planned for 2017. A group of Dawn’s friends raised £1,200 through a zipwire ride and a fundraising swim in Coniston Water.

Dawn has more than 1,200 people following her battle with cancer on Facebook and has so far raised more than £12,000 for good causes, largely through donations given through websites like Just Giving.

Why does Dawn do it all? “York Against Cancer is such a great local charity”, she says. “It is absolutely looking after us all.”

Husband Stuart, who has joined Dawn in her fundraising, paid tribute to his inspirational wife:

“Dawn is such a caring and loving individual, and she often doesn’t realise the joy she brings to others” he said. “Despite her condition, she remains very positive, still finds time for her family and friends and always has a smile on her face.”
