Strictly for us!

28th March 2017

Nicola Gant had breast cancer in 2009 and, although she’s recovered, she knows through experience that not everyone is as lucky. The York branch of homecare service Bluebird Care, where she’s the director, has looked after about 500 people since it began in 2011, including terminally ill patients. Nicola’s team even cared for a colleague, Sally, who was just 49 when she died of cancer in 2015.

Finding ways to help fight the disease is a way of life for Nicola and her staff, with their latest fundraiser a “Come Dancing” event, including a Cha-Cha-Cha lesson for beginners. Attended by 80 people, including an 84-year-old man, it raised £725 for York Against Cancer.

“My husband Andy is a qualified dance teacher and we thought this would be a bit different. And so many people love Strictly!” said Nicola, 51, who began ballroom dancing after meeting Andy four years ago. “We both dance at the Jean Harvey School of Dance; Jean trained Andy and on the night of the ball she helped with the teaching.”

People who had never danced before took part in a one-hour lesson at Melodie Park on Wigginton Road before beginners and experts alike - including a former amateur dance champion - mingled on the dance floor. A particular highlight of the night was a sequence dance and a variety of music was played. “Some Latin American dances can be done to pop music; the Cha-Cha-Cha can even be done to Kylie’s I Can’t Get You Out Of My Head!” said Nicola.

Julie Russell, our general manager, said the dance was a wonderful idea. “People had a great time and raised a lot of money for our fight against cancer. We can't thank Bluebird Care and everyone who danced the night away enough for their fantastic efforts."

Over the years Bluebird Care (York) has raised thousands of pounds for good causes through various events. At work the team offers a range of services from shopping and companionship to full personal care, including live-in help.

Bluebird Care is a leading care-at-home provider with more than 200 offices around the country and around 20,000 customer visits each day.
