Minibus Service
If you’re local to York and need to undergo radiotherapy treatment, you’ll need to visit the Bexley Wing of St James’s Hospital in Leeds. Our minibus service is here to help anyone who might find it difficult to organise the journey themselves, taking you there from door to door. The offer of a lift means reduced stress, no fuel costs, no parking costs, and less reliance on family and friends. Our minibus is free to use and runs Monday-Friday.
Our friendly drivers, Gary and Neil, will give you a warm welcome, and endeavour to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Radiotherapy often needs multiple sessions, so our patients often make friends with one another as they take their trips on the York Against Cancer minibus.
How the service works
We have one minibus which can take up to nine passengers (plus the driver). We kindly ask that you give us as much notice as possible to ensure that we can provide you with a seat on the bus. We work around all other patients on the bus to make the trips as efficient as possible.
We offer a door-to-door service, so when you get in touch with us, we’ll need your name and address, plus details of your appointments.
If your appointments are at different times from the other passengers we will, with your permission, liaise with the booking office at St. James’s Hospital to alter your times. We have a great relationship with the booking office and do this all the time, so don’t worry about this!
We do our very best to support as many people as possible with this service, however, if you live out of York and/or the minibus is at full capacity, we may not be able to provide you with a seat on the minibus. If this is the case, we will do our best to help you with another means of transport, for example a volunteer driver or a taxi. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to see what options are available for you.
Meet our drivers
Neil Johnson
Neil is originally from Leeds but has lived in Tadcaster for 15 years. He’s a former police armed response officer. When he retired, he was intending to take six months off until he spotted our ad for a minibus driver. “I thought, this suits me down to the ground,” says Neil. “I love this job. I enjoy doing work that is appreciated – I had more people saying thank you to me in the first week here than I had in the previous 30 years!”
Garry Stanton
Garry has had a varied career including 23 years in the police force, starting his working life in the Royal Navy as a missileman on board the HMS Brilliant. Garry added ‘I really enjoy meeting new people and giving a little bit back to the community which I find very rewarding’.
