The Jack Birch Unit at the International Bladder Cancer Network 2024
Earlier this month, a group of researchers from the Jack Birch Unit (JBU) travelled to the International Bladder Cancer Network meeting in Bern, Switzerland, where JBU Director, Professor Jenny Southgate, gave the invited 2024 IBCN lecture.
We are delighted to share that Jenny was awarded Honorary Membership as a lifetime achievement award for her contribution to bladder cancer research. Jenny states, “The IBCN is an inspiring meeting where scientists and clinicians from all over the world get together to discuss the latest progress in bladder cancer research and therapy. This year, it felt very much that the JBU were centre stage, with Andrew Mason, Simon Baker and myself all giving talks. I was really chuffed to have been invited to deliver the annual IBCN keynote lecture and it was absolutely amazing to have then been awarded honorary membership of the society. It was most definitely a highlight of my career!”
During the conference, JBU researchers Andrew Mason and Simon Baker also gave talks on the important work being done at the JBU. Simon was selected as the best talk at the event, and he shared, “With the meeting being held in Bern in Switzerland this year, the IBCN conference is a great opportunity for us to hear about the cutting-edge research taking place in Europe and the USA, as well as sharing our own. This year I shared, for the first time, our work on BK virus where we have been trying to establish the risk infection poses for developing bladder cancer later in life. I was really pleased to be awarded the best speaker prize. The award is great encouragement as we write up the story for publication. We will share the full story of this research with York Against Cancer’s community as soon as it is published.”
York Against Cancer is proud to fund the JBU and their research into the causes, prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, and it is wonderful to see their hard work be recognised. We can’t wait to see how their research will continue to develop and make a positive impact in the field of bladder cancer research.
